In previous part we learned about 5 dangerous chemicals used in nail polish. Now let us have a closer look on the other 5 chemicals that our 10-free nail polish does not contain and reasons why these chemicals are dangerous for us.

• Ethyl tosylamide

Ethyl tosylamide is used in nail polish formulation as softener and it helps to create smooth finish of the product. It also increases durability and prolongs staying power. From chemical point of view it belongs to sulfonamides, which are completely forbidden within EU, because their chemical composition resembles antibiotics, which caused fear from public health perspective in relation to antibiotics resistance.

Look for ETHYL TOSYLAMIDE in product labels to identify it.

• Dibutyl phthalate

Dibutyl phthalate belogns among phthalates, which is also apparent from its name, and it is used in nail polish to decrease chipping. Phthalates are qualified as endocrinne disruptors and in human body they imitate hormone estrogen. Phthalates cause aggravation of hormonal development of male fetuses, damage organs and can cause premature menopause. Phthalates are completely forbidden in EU.

Look for DIBUTYL PHTHALATE in product labels to identify it.

• Triphenyl phosphate

It is used in nail polish to increase elasticity and also as antiflammable component. Effects of thiphenyl phosphate on humans are not sufficiently investigated, although even now research indicates that exposure to thiphenyl phosphate can impact endocrine system, negatively can impact reproduction and development, even genotoxicity. Shortterm research on fish showed changes in hormonal balance and disruption in reproduction. Also, research indicates that it disrupts metabolism and function of thyroid gland.

Look for TRIPHENYL PHOSPHATE in product labels to identify it.

• Parabens

Parabens are most common to public. They are used as preservatives that prevent bacterial growth, and therefore prolong shelf life of products. There are assumptions that parabens are hormonal disruptors, and can be linked to increased risks of certain types of cancer. Also parabens can be alergens. Within EU, there are safe amounts for their use in cosmetics.

Look for METHYLPARABEN, BUTYL PARABEN, PROPYL PARABEN in product labels to identify it.

• Animal derived products

Veganism has been definitely on rise lately, and we can find more and more products labeled as vegan. We certainly hope that it is not just a trend, but a change of mindset, that will be permanent. Most common animal derived products in nail polish are:

• Carmine – red pigment that is obtained from female bodies of insects of the species Dactylopius
• Guanine – crystalline compound that is obtained from fish scales for their shiny effect
• Keratin – animal protein that is obtained from mammals such as cattle, horses, pigs, rabbits and others. When it comes to cosmetics, it is believed that keratin strenghtens surface of nails, hair and even skin. But applied topically it only gives healthier appearance while it is not washed out.

Unfortunately, these are not the only ones, so read the labels carefully, if vegan products are important for you.
